The Old Man from Belfast

The Old Man from Belfast was callous but wise

Fear death and loathing had been seen with those eyes

He’d grown up in Belfast through the chaos and dismay

Until one dark morning he joined the IRA

The Old Man from Belfast had been taught to hate

The British for their treatment and the sealing of the fate

Of Ireland a country who yearns to be free

And so he enrolled to fight for this dream

The Old Man from Belfast did some terrible things

Violence, murder and atrocities and all that it brings

He thought the solution to end British rule

Was to bomb, shoot and kill kids who had barely left school

The Old Man from Belfast didn’t realise his mistake

Taking the life of fellow humans was not his decision to make

Instead of putting effort into the  discussion of peace

He took to the streets to kill protestants and police

The Old Man from Belfast knew the Brits were in the wrong

They had torn apart his country for far too long

The British were evil, cruel and unfair

Conquering and destroying peoples land without care

The Old Man from Belfast soon realised his error

This violence and terror could not go on forever

He took the decision to lay down his arms

And go back to working his life on the farms

The Old Man from Belfast now campaign’s for freedom

He wants no more death, no more suffering, no more martyrdom

He understands now that the solution is democracy

To listen to the people and destroy hypocrisy

The Old Man from Belfast is now wiser than Britain

He knows that the solution is education not demolition

A country cannot just start wars anymore

It cannot bomb innocent people and burn cities to the floor

The Old Man from Belfast doesn’t believe the lies

That are spread by the media, the politicians and spies,

They want us to think that they start wars just to aid

Suffering countries who with their lives they have paid

The Old Man from Belfast he asks the question

When have these countries ever asked for protection?

Why does a country like Ireland, Syria or Afghanistan,

Need the help of the foreign man?

The Old Man from Belfast knows that there is another reason

To start these wars and cause uprise and treason

These countries do not fit into the plan of the man

And so he interferes and pillages what he can.

The Old Man from Belfast wants to repent for his sins

So he goes out and talks with youths and children

He teaches them that violence is not the answer

That we need peaceful talks and tolerance of one another

The Old Man from Belfast is terminally ill

He no longer has much more time to kill

He will die happy knowing that he has now done his best

To spread his message and take the guilt off his chest

The Old Man from Belfast has a well attended funeral

He has ended lives but touched lives, and was now loved by all

He wrote in his will that he wants all his possessions

To be given to charity, to the victims of aggression

The Old Man from Belfast will leave a legacy

His life has taught people the price of rebelry

Although he committed crimes of the worst

His story is positive and he will not be the first

The Old Man from Belfast wants that bit by bit

People wise up and try to solve this shit

That one day the world will be free of pains

And peace and harmony will be all that remains
